The Little Selkie

by K.M. Shea

I am continuing on with the Timeless Fairytale series by K.M. Shea, this time with a fairytale that reminds me in bits and pieces of Disney's The Little Mermaid.  (which, by the way, I was horrified when I read the original fairytale that movie was based on.  I am so thankful that classic Disney polished so many children's classics and made them less traumatizing for young children)

K.M. Shea is so, sooooo talented.  Her writing draws you right in to the story and even though she is rewriting all of the classic fairytales, (she is really good about keeping in line with the original story), she really shines as her creativity and imagination unfold in her writing.

In this story, Dylan (a selkie) is kidnapped by the Sea Witch.  When Dylan realizes what the Sea Witch is about to do: use her voice at her (the witches') whim for destruction and to advance an as yet unknown evil plan, Dylan makes a rash, yet bravely necessary choice.  Despite being lugged away and guarded almost constantly, she sets her heart to both discover and disrupt the Sea Witch's plans and to regain her pelt, which was stolen from her and is now in the posession of her captors.

Even though I love K.M. Shea's writing, this one took me a bit to get into.  It could be all the reading I have been scrambling to do to finish the Brighter Winter challenge, or it could be all that unfolded this week (a bit hairy week when it was all said and done)...no matter what the reason, I am glad I stuck it out and pushed through - because this became a page turner!!
