Studies in the Sermon on the Mount (second half)

 by Dr. Martyn Lloyd-Jones

I read the first thirteen chapters last spring/summer and then went through the study a second time this past winter (I think it was January or February).  At the time I went ahead and read the first half of his book, with the intention of finishing the entire book sooner rather than later.

It ended up being later rather than sooner...but WOW.

First of all, more time than I had planned on has passed, I decided this week as the Same Page Summer reading plan had us in Matthew, that this was the week to read the second half.

Second of all, this book isn't one you can zip through.  The teaching is AMAZING.  Hard.  But so, so, soooo good. I always feel so incapable of writing an adequate review or wrap-up post after reading a book like this.

What do I say to adequately capture what this book meant to me?

That it is life changing?  It is, but I feel like that phrase is so overused it has ceased to mean what it is supposed to mean.

I LOVED it?  I did, but again that doesn't capture the weight and truth this volume of sermons contains.

That it is full of truth and nourishment and teaching on the Words of Christ contained in the Sermon on the Mount?  It is that, but it isn't dry or dead or boring (like some commentaries/teaching/sermons can be - I was NOT referring to the Word of God when I said dry, dead, or boring).

It is beautiful and painful and lovely and full of truth.

It is course correcting and humbling and solid teaching.

HIGHLY recommend.

I have read two books this year that tie now as my favorite - Hudson Taylor's Spiritual Secret and Studies in the Sermon on the Mount.  If you haven't read either of these...read them!!  As soon as you can, read them.
