Book one is a FAVORITE at my house. (Still! Even this past week it was playing as they dropped off to sleep!)
I think it is partly due to the narrator on Audible (narrated by Katherine Kellgren = FANTASTIC narrator) and partly due to the writing of Maryrose Wood (she is such a delightful story teller).
However, we stopped with book one and never finished the series. Which always left me wondering about the mystery behind these three children and their odd resemblances to their new governess (Miss Lumley). Since my library happened to have a copy of book two available, I checked it out.
And this excerpt is exactly why I love listening in as they listened:
"...There, at a charming table for two, with her only companion the thin plume of steam that rose lazily from the teapot before her, sat Miss Charlotte Mortimer.
Changed or unchanged, bad news or good, it no longer mattered. The mere sight of her former headmistress, with her long, dark blond hair pulled back in its familiar pretty chignon at the base of her neck and her graceful, perfectly upright posture on display even as she sat reading the newspaper (as Agatha Swansburne once said, "To be kept waiting is unfortunate, but to be kept waiting with nothing intersting to read is a tragedy of Greek proportions") ..."
Absolutely charming!
I LOVE her writing.
Unfortunately though, all this book did was deepen the mystery and so now I must (see how I did that, excused myself to read the next book?!?) read book three!! 😊
